IB Maths

About IB Math

The IB Diploma Program has 4 offerings in the mathematics group:
1. Mathematical Studies (SL)
2. Mathematics (SL)
3. Mathematics (HL)
4. Further Mathematics (HL)

It is compulsory for a student to choose a subject from this group, and as a result the math varies in terms of depth, rigour and the number of core Math topics covered. Students generally choose either Math (SL) or Math (HL) based on future career choice or further studies.

Differences between SL and HL Math

Highlevel differences include
1. HL requires students to study certain topics in greater depth than SL
2. HL requires students to study options while SL does not require this
3. As HL is greater in terms of breadth and depth, it tends to be a lot more demanding than that of SL in terms of time commitment, understanding level, and general mathematical ability

IB Math HL Syllabus

IB Math HL (much like its science counterparts) tends to stick very closely to the published syllabus. However, many questions do appear ‘out-of-syllabus’ simply because students are also required to think out of the box instead of merely regurgitating facts and figures, and memorizing formulas. Hence it is not sufficient to be just familiar with with the Math syllabus topics, but additionally, a student needs to understand and prepare to apply the concepts thoroughly.

The topics covered in the IB Math HL can be divided into three categories:

Practical Scheme of Work

Statistics and probability

Mathematical exploration : An area of math chosen by the student for an internally assessed individual investigation

Functions and equations

Sets, relations and groups

Practical work arranged by school or otherwise

Circular functions and trigonometry

Discrete mathematics

Statistics and probability

How can Prep Zone help?

Prep Zone offers premier training courses for IB Math. Our individual classes are completely customisable. You decide how many sessions you want, you decide how long each session should be, you decide how frequently you would like to have sessions, and most importantly, you decide when you want the sessions. We work 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the year (except some public holidays). Sessions can be 1 hour long, or as much as 3-4 hours long – as we charge by hours. Individual sessions are ideal for focusing on stuff that you’re particularly weak at, clearing doubts, and revising practice material/mock exams.
