The GRE covers three sections – Analytical Writing, Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning.
This section measures your critical thinking and analytical writing skills. Specifically your ability to articulate and support complex ideas clearly and effectively.
This section measures your problem-solving abilities by using basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis.
This section measures your ability to analyse and evaluate written material. It also analyzes how you synthesize information obtained from it. Additionally, it analyzes relationships among component parts of sentences and recognize relationships among words and concepts.
You have about 1 hour & 58 minutes to complete the test. There are 5 sections
The first section will always be Analytical Writing. Followed by Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, unidentified/unscored sections in any order.
Therefore, treat each section as if it counts toward your score.
Measure | Number of Questions | Allotted Time |
---|---|---|
Analytical Writing (One section ) |
One “Analyze an Issue” task and one “Analyze an Argument” task | 30 minutes per task |
Verbal Reasoning (Two sections) |
27 questions total | 47 minutes total |
Quantitative Reasoning (Two sections) |
27 questions total | 41 minutes total |
Unscored | NO | NO |
Research | NO | No |
The unidentified unscored section will not count towards your score. It may also appear in any order after the Analytical Writing Section. Additionally, these questions are being tried out for future tests and to ensure the scores on new editions of the test are comparable to scores from earlier editions. An identified research section may be included in place of the unscored section. It will always appear at the end of the test. These questions are used for ETS research purposes.
The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are section-level adaptive. As a result, the first sections have a range of difficulty levels, from easy to difficult.
The first section is assembled such that, it is of average difficulty. The difficulty level of the second section is dependent on the performance of the first section.
Therefore, if you do well in the Quantitative Reasoning measure for the first section, consequently, the second section of the Quantitative Reasoning measure will be at a higher level of difficulty.
Additionally, the scoring for the Quantitative Reasoning measure takes into consideration the total number of questions answered correctly across the two sections, as well as the difficulty level of the section (similar process for the Verbal Reasoning measure).
It has an advanced adaptive design. Hence, it allows you to freely move forward and backwards throughout an entire section. Specific features include:
